I get this is a really ridiculous question to ask on a Catholic Mom blog, but I figure there's gotta be someone out there who has some suggestions. I'm 30 years old and I'm beginning to go gray. I'm not concerned with that so much as what it's doing to the cleanliness of my hair. This picture (taken a while ago) shows a part in my hair. This is typically where the problem is most noticeable. So you can understand why it's beginning to annoy me given how prominent that particular area is. A few weeks ago, I noticed that my hair feels like wax in certain areas. I hadn't changed shampoo or conditioner, and I hadn't done anything different with my hair. Why, all of the sudden, was my hair acting funny? I tried washing it several times, because I understand that every now and again gunk builds up and needs to be washed away with a good clarifying shampoo. However, nothing worked. So I Googled the issue, and sure enough, as hair goes gray, the roots get coarse and absorb conditioner and oils a lot more than they used to. As a result, some areas get waxy. I tried doing a combination of baking soda and apple cider vinegar (as some folks suggested). Aside from making my hair smell like a salad, the progress was minimal. I still had waxy hair. I tried Listerine. Truthfully, the Listerine did work much better, but it left my ends brittle (even WITH the conditioner). I get that my hair is changing on account of age. But there's gotta be a better way of cleaning my hair. Thoughts? I donate my hair in April, so please nothing drastic as I'd like my hair to be somewhat decent for the person who gets it next. Thanks!

You may not have changed your shampoo and conditioner, but the company may have changed the formula, which may not be helping the situation at all. Get a shampoo that is specifically a clarifying one. Use it every other wash or so. Though many people advise against it, maybe washing daily will help. (I wash my hair daiy because I can't even go 24 hours before the grease takes over) And when you put the conditioner on, don't put in on your scalp, only on the ends. Start at the ends and work your way up to a few inches from the scalp. There are also dry shampoos that you spray on your roots that absorb the oil- it could help some. I have a can that I keep at work I. The event I shvitz too much and the oils get all over my head.

Wow, pardon the typos. I blame the phone and my impatience.

Annnd, bootykins. The formulas haven't changed, so that rules that out. Blah.

Oh, I'm 120% sure it's hereditary. All of the women in my family went gray early. I knew it was only a matter of time before I started.

Because you donate your hair, I know you won't color it. The good thing about hair color, when it's done correctly at a solon, is that it gives your hair body and shine. A lot of that has to do with the conditioners your stylist will use. I've been doing my hair blonde for eight years or more, but where I used to see dark roots I see some gray creeping in as well. I haven't noticed any waxy areas yet.
